What's trending: Fitness in 2015

Ah January, the start of a fresh new year. New possibilities, new exciting challenges, and for me, the YEAR OF THE BODY! …But no one said this would be easy.  Almost two weeks have now past since January 1 and, well, my resolutions have started to fade into the haze of the holiday season.

But I’m determined to battle through and continue with my quest to get super toned, build strength and eat my way to a healthy, happy body. This is going to take a great deal of determination, hard work and dedication but I am up for the challenge. So if, like me, you need some new inspiration to keep on track with your fitness goals, here’s the top five fitness trends for 2015:

HIIT

This four letter word has simply exploded over the past few years. From indoor cycling to tabata, these short bursts of intense exercise are an excellent way to see results fast. The acronym stands for High Intensity Interval Training and basically encompasses any exercise where you work REALLY hard for a short periods of time, rest for a set amount of time and repeat. Not only will you get fast results, but you’re also highly unlikely to get bored!

 

Body weight training

People have been body weight training for centuries but it officially popped back onto our radars back in 2013 when fitness experts realised that going back to basics was one of the most effective ways of getting results fast. So put down the weights, stand away from the machines and get back to basics with some push ups, pull ups, burpees and you can even throw a star jump or 50 in there.

Short workouts

With our lives being so darn busy these days, short workouts could be just the thing you’ve been looking for. All you have to do is push really reallyyyy hard for 15-30 minutes and the results will be just as effective as an hour long session at your normal pace. So time, my friends, can no longer be an excuse! Look for short, high intensity classes at your gym or simply find a large flight of stairs and sprint up and down them for 5 minutes, then rest and repeat!

Yoga

I’m completely in love with yoga!! As you probably already know, it is a physical and spiritual practice which not only transforms the body but also your mind. There’s an abundance of new types of yoga practises to try so it’s worth testing out a few different ones and you’re bound to find one that you love. Classes range from the more traditional forms like Bikram and Hatha, to the new trendy alternatives like Power Yoga and Yogalates. I’m a big fan of Ashtanga which is a modern day form of classical Indian yoga. There’s a big focus on your breathing (which I really struggled with at first!) but is a great way to build all over body strength at the same time as stretching out your muscles and improving your flexibility. A year ago I couldn’t even touch my toes and now I can put my legs over my head and touch my head with my toes. Pretty impressive, righhht!

Telemetry

For those of you who are interested in technology, I highly recommend investing in a sports watch, wristband or an app to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle, both through exercise and nutrition. These devices are a great way to stay motivated and have helped me to see consistent improvements in my performance. Some of my favourite apps are the new Lorna Jane app and MyFitnessPal, both of which you can purchase from the Apple store. I also love the new TomTom Multi Sport watch which tracks your performance when running, cycling and swimming.

Hopefully you’re now as pumped as I am for the year ahead! Remember to allow time to recover after exercise, especially after high intensity workouts and always remember to stretch…and then stretch a little bit more!
